What examiners said

If not scoring full marks, most gained a method mark for a correct factor tree or table, or for listing at least the first 3 multiples of both 30 and 68. A significant number of responses set out their table of prime factors comparing the numbers side by side rather than using separate tables for 30 and 68. For some candidates this approach caused arithmetic errors or confusion of which prime fac...

The best responses used the method of finding the LCM of 28 and 48, giving the answer in terms of either the 12-hour or 24-hour clock. An alternative method was to list the times of the buses leaving the station, but it was rare for the lists of both buses to lead to the correct time. Those using factor trees or tables started well but not many then correctly worked out the required time of day. S...

— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 0980/12 Q20 (Cambridge)

This question did not ask for the lowest common multiple so any common multiple gained credit. The common correct answer was 72, the LCM, but, for example, 144 or 432 (18 × 24) were acceptable answers. There were a number of candidates who gave a common factor of the two numbers so 2, 3 or 6, the HCF, were seen frequently and sometimes, more than one factor was given.
