What examiners said

Candidates knew that the food web must start with a producer. Some candidates circled herbivore. They are reminded that herbivores are animals that only feed on plants.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/33 Q3(a)(i) (Cambridge)

Primary consumers feed on plants, the phytoplankton. Most candidates wrote zooplankton or unicornfish to gain credit. The most common incorrect answer was parrotfish. This fish was a tertiary consumer. Some candidates thought that the coral was a plant.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/33 Q3(a)(ii) (Cambridge)

Candidates interpreted the food web well, showing an understanding of the interdependence of nature. The loss of the only food source for the parrotfish would cause their numbers to decrease.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/33 Q3(b)(i) (Cambridge)
