What examiners said

Many candidates found this question challenging. The key to obtaining a correct answer involved interpreting the diagram. Incorrect responses included respiration, decomposition and fossilisation. Some of these terms are often found at the bottom of other diagrams of the carbon cycle, but they do not represent process B.

— Examiner report, February/March 2024, 0653/32 Q7(a)(i) (Cambridge)

Most candidates correctly identified the shrimp. The most common mistake was to identify the frog. The frog is a secondary consumer at trophic level three.

— Examiner report, May/June 2022, 0653/43 Q7(a) (Cambridge)

In order to gain full credit, candidates had to refer specifically to consumption of one organism by another. Most candidates did this. A number of candidates described details of energy losses during transfer at trophic levels but gained only partial credit because they did not mention feeding.
