The coil in the generator is rotated at a constant speed. On Fig. 12.2 sketch a graph of e.m.f. against time for the output of the a.c. generator. 0 time 0 e.m.f.
See it on the paper →The speed of rotation of the coil in the generator is doubled. Describe how the e.m.f. against time graph changes.
See it on the paper →On Fig. 6.4, sketch a graph of voltage output against time for a simple a.c. generator rotating with a constant speed. voltage output time Fig. 6.4
See it on the paper →Describe how turning the coil produces an a.c. output from the coil.
See it on the paper →Name the component labelled X in Fig. 6.2. Describe two functions of component X in this generator. component name 1. 2.
See it on the paper →The size of the voltage from the generator is indicated by the amplitude of the wave in Fig. 9.4. On Fig. 9.4, draw the voltage output of the generator with a smaller voltage.
See it on the paper →Which graph shows how the output voltage of an a.c. generator varies with time?
See it on the paper →There were some nicely drawn sinusoids, where candidates had been careful to keep the amplitude and period constant.

Only the most able candidates were able to describe how a generator produces an a.c. output in enough detail to be awarded these marks. Many candidates simply repeated the information given in the question rather than describing how the coil interacts with the magnetic field. Some candidates mixed up the generator with a d.c. motor and gave an answer in terms of the current causing the coil to tur...

Most candidates were able to correctly name the component as the slip ring. Occasionally the component was incorrectly identified as a split ring, again showing confusion between a generator and a motor. Fewer candidates were able to describe the function of the slip rings with many incorrect responses referring to the slip rings providing an alternating current for the coil or providing a connect...
