Describe how electrical power is generated from geothermal resources.
See it on the paper →Geothermal resources do not rely on radiation from the Sun. State two other energy resources for generating electrical power which do not rely on radiation from the Sun.

See it on the paper →The nuclear power station uses a generator to produce electrical energy. Fig. 12.2 shows a diagram of a simple a.c. generator. permanent magnets S slip rings coil N output potential difference Fig. 12.2 Describe how a simple a.c. generator produces an output potential difference. Include a description of the role of th...

See it on the paper →Explain why a current is induced in the wire as it is moved between the poles of the magnet.
See it on the paper →Place ticks (3) in Table 12.1 to show how the reading on the ammeter changes under different conditions. Table 12.1 ammeter reading the wire in (a)(i) is: becomes zero increases decreases becomes negative moved faster moved from right to left kept stationary replaced with a wire of lower resistance
See it on the paper →A few candidates appreciated that the coil of the generator is turned by the turbine, cutting the magnetic field or experiencing a change in magnetic field, and inducing an e.m.f. There was much confusion with processes occurring in an electric motor.
— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 0654/43 Q6(b)(i) (Cambridge)
Candidates found this question demanding and often repeated the information in the stem in their answer, rather than providing any new information. The best responses described the effect on the wire and that due to the wire experiencing a changing magnetic field an e.m.f. is induced. Few candidates included the term e.m.f. in their responses.
— Examiner report, February/March 2023, 0654/42 Q12(a)(i) (Cambridge)
This question was generally answered well with most candidates gaining at least partial credit. The most common error was to suggest that a decreased resistance would lead to a decreasing ammeter reading.

Fig. 3.1 shows a bar magnet suspended by a spring above a coil that is connected to a voltmeter. spring N coil magnet S V voltmeter Fig. 3.1 When the magnet is pulled downwards into the coil and then released, it oscillates up and down inside the coil. An alternating voltage is observed on the voltmeter. Explain why an...
