What examiners said

Some candidates were able to give the equation but it was very common to see reactants and products reversed or the equation for photosynthesis given.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0973/31 Q3(b)(i) (Cambridge)

Most candidates realised that one difference between aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration is that only aerobic respiration requires oxygen. Some candidates wrote about aerobic respiration releasing more energy or not having lactic acid as one of the products. Other differences were not as well known. A few candidates thought that anaerobic respiration in humans has ethanol as one of the p...

— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0973/41 Q4(b) (Cambridge)

Some candidates did not answer this question in terms of the context of eutrophication. Candidates should be reminded to read all the stimulus material provided and tailor their responses to the context in which the question is placed. Candidates that recognised that the decomposition of producers by aerobic bacteria would increase the removal of dissolved oxygen generally scored full marks.
