What examiners said
State symbols were very well known. A small number gave (l) for HCl .
— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 5070/21 Q3(a) (Cambridge)
Products of electrolysis were not well known. At the anode common incorrect responses included bromide, calcium, Br − and Ca2+, and at the cathode calcium and bromide.

Candidates found ionic half equations very difficult. Br − Br + e–, Br2 2Br – + 2e–, 2Br − + 2e– 2Br and 2Br – + 2e– Br2 were common anode equations and Ca2+ + 2e– 2Ca, Ca+ + e Ca, Ca2+ 2Ca + 2e−, and H+ + e− H were common cathode equations. A small number omitted the question.
