What examiners said
The majority of candidates understood that they had to multiply the appropriate terms in the brackets to give four terms, two of which would combine leaving three terms in the answer. However, multiplying directed numbers caused many errors to be made, resulting in at least one mark being lost. The most common error was –28, instead of + 28 when the number term was calculated.
— Examiner report, May/June 2024, 0980/12 Q20 (Cambridge)
Many candidates showed correct working in this part leading to the required result although some lost the accuracy mark due to slips in signs or omission of powers at some stage. They usually multiplied one pair of brackets out correctly and often simplified the result to a 3-term expression which simplified the second product. Terms were usually collected correctly. Work was sometimes poorly pres...
— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 0980/42 Q8(a)(i) (Cambridge)
Fewer candidates gained full credit in this part. A number of candidates wrote that + 5x – 3x was –2x or ±8x following on from a correct expansion suggesting they had misunderstood the rules about positive and negative signs but had handled the more complex process correctly.
