What examiners said

Comprehensive responses • This was correctly answered by the majority of the candidates. Limited responses • A few did not multiply a power of 10 by a value between 1 and 10, for example a common incorrect answer was 23 104. • The most frequent error was to give a power of –5 rather than 5. • Other common incorrect answers were to miscount the number of zeros evident in answers such as 2.3 104.

— Examiner report, February/March 2026, 0580/22 Q12(a) (Cambridge)

Comprehensive responses • Many correctly amended the terms so that the powers of 10 were the same value in order to answer this question. • A small number factorised to form calculations such as 1031(4.2 10 – 4.2) or (4.2 1031) (10 – 1). Limited responses • Quite a few candidates made arithmetic errors when subtracting 0.42 from 4.2. • Sometimes the powers of 10 were not adjusted correctly, for e...

— Examiner report, February/March 2026, 0580/22 Q12(b) (Cambridge)

Some gave 112, a multiple of 56, not a factor. 49 was chosen sometimes perhaps as it is also in the 7 times table.
