When air is heated, its temperature and volume increase. Explain why this happens. Use ideas about particle motion and separation in your answer. volume increases because temperature increases because
See it on the paper →Explain why the density of air decreases when the temperature of air increases.
See it on the paper →Fig. 1.1 shows the reading on the thermometer. 50 °C 40 30 Fig. 1.1 Record the final temperature of the water. final temperature of water = °C
See it on the paper →There is more water vapour above the water surface at 90 °C than at 20 °C. Explain why, in terms of the motion of water molecules.
See it on the paper →Describe the arrangement, separation and motion of the molecules in the gas inside the cylinder.
See it on the paper →More gas is put into the cylinder by a pump. As the gas is pumped in, the pressure inside the cylinder increases. Describe the change that takes place in the separation of the molecules.
See it on the paper →In the box in Fig. 9.1, draw the arrangement of particles in a gas. One particle has been drawn for you. Draw 6 more particles. particle Fig. 9.1
See it on the paper →The temperature increases because the particles move faster. The volume increases because the particles move further apart from each other. Some candidates gained partial credit for the first part of the question. A common error described the motion of the particles as vibration. This term is used to describe the motion of particles in a solid. They can vibrate around their fixed point without cha...
— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/32 Q8(a)(ii) (Cambridge)
Almost every candidate read the thermometer correctly to give a value of 37, but not all included the decimal place to give 37.0. In this case, there was no instruction in the question that the reading needed to be to a resolution smaller than a whole degree, so 37 was accepted.
— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0653/61 Q1(a)(i) (Cambridge)
Heating the water gave the water molecules more kinetic energy. Most candidates stated this correctly. Fewer candidates continued their answer to explain that the increased kinetic energy enabled more water molecules to escape from the surface of the water. Therefore, only partial credit was obtained by the majority of candidates.
