What examiners said

The question asked candidates to describe observations and so answers for sodium such as ‘it reacts’ were not detailed enough. The answer, ‘sodium hydroxide and hydrogen are produced’ was not an observation and so did not gain credit in the context of this question. However, large numbers of candidates had evidently seen this reaction and gave acceptable answers. In the case of copper, candidates...

— Examiner report, February/March 2025, 0653/42 Q4(a)(i) (Cambridge)

Candidates had to make a statement about compounds of both metals. Answers such as “copper has coloured compounds” without any corresponding comment for sodium compounds did not gain credit.

— Examiner report, February/March 2025, 0653/42 Q4(a)(ii) (Cambridge)

The correct formulae for copper(II) oxide and sodium chloride were usually stated. Formulae had to be correct in every detail and so credit was not awarded if subscripts, ionic charges or stoichiometry from a balanced equation were included.
