What examiners said
Candidates chose the incorrect option B more often than the correct option, C. Candidates are required to know the position of the transition elements in the Periodic Table, and that transition elements and their compounds act as catalysts to increase the rate of some reactions.
— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0653/12 Q23 (Cambridge)
Some candidates gave a correct explanation of the term diatomic, a molecule containing two atoms. Incorrect responses stated two molecules, two electrons or two elements. Some responses described diatomic in terms of reactivity.
— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0653/31 Q8(c)(i) (Cambridge)
There were several possible answers possible for this question. More candidates correctly suggested a transition metal, the first answer, than the group l metal needed for the second answer. The key to suggesting a suitable second metal was that it is soft, a property of group l metals.
