What examiners said

Candidates who were familiar with reduction being the removal of oxygen gained full credit. Some candidates circled reduced, but did not give any, or good enough explanations. Many candidates wrote oxidised so gained no credit.

— Examiner report, February/March 2021, 0653/32 Q8(c)(iii) (Cambridge)

Candidates were asked to recall the term ‘reduction’ having been given a description of reduction. Quite a few candidates left this blank and there were a very wide range of incorrect responses that suggested candidates did not understand the question. A few candidates incorrectly stated that the process was oxidation.

— Examiner report, October/November 2019, 0653/33 Q8(b)(ii) (Cambridge)

The majority of candidates were familiar with redox and many wrote perfect answers. The strongest candidates made it clear that it was iron(III) oxide that is reduced rather than iron. Similarly the strongest answers stated that it was carbon monoxide that is oxidised rather than carbon. Candidates should be advised that when answering questions like this one they should use the names of the subst...
