What examiners said

Many candidates were able to correctly link the squeaky pop with a lighted splint to hydrogen.

— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0653/62 Q2(c) (Cambridge)

Some candidates were able to state the correct formula for iron(II)oxide. The most common incorrect answer was Fe2Cl. A few candidates incorrectly thought they needed to provide a balanced symbol equation for the reaction.

— Examiner report, October/November 2022, 0653/43 Q5(c)(i) (Cambridge)

This was answered correctly by many candidates. Candidates needed to present the formula of calcium chloride perfectly in order to gain the mark. Letters in the symbols must be clearly upper and lower case and the figure 2 must be shown as a subscript.
