What examiners said

Stronger candidates stated glucose to gain credit. Other responses included amylase and sucrose.

— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0653/31 Q4(c)(iii) (Cambridge)

Many candidates had learned that starch is used to store glucose. Any reasonable reference to storage was accepted including storage of food and storage of energy. The most common misconception was that starch provides energy directly and so answers such as “for energy” or “for food” were not accepted.

— Examiner report, February/March 2023, 0653/42 Q4(d) (Cambridge)

Many candidates answered this question correctly, stating glucose. Common errors included sucrose, amino acids and the three elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Candidates are reminded that the three elements, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, are combined to make a glucose molecule, and it is many of these small molecules of glucose that then make up a large molecule of starch.
