What examiners said

There were many correct answers from candidates who had learned the definition of osmosis. The most common mistake was diffusion. Candidates are reminded that osmosis is a special type of diffusion involving the net movement of water through a partially permeable membrane.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/31 Q1(b)(i) (Cambridge)

This was generally answered well. A few candidates stated ‘active transport’ or ‘absorbing’ instead of osmosis.

— Examiner report, February/March 2025, 0653/32 Q2(d)(ii) (Cambridge)

While a majority of candidates chose the correct option D, a number of candidates incorrectly chose option C. In both cases, candidates identified that osmosis involves water, but some thought movement was across the cell wall rather than a partially permeable membrane.

— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0653/12 Q1 (Cambridge)
