What examiners said

Candidates could see that the cows eat grass, but this needed to be linked to herbivore. A herbivore only eats plant material. Some responses contained the word ‘only’ and these were awarded credit. Candidates who stated that herbivores do not eat meat also gained credit.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/31 Q1(c)(ii) (Cambridge)

Generally well answered. Candidates successfully identified a herbivore, fish, fly or slug. Although the turtle was shown to feed on aquatic plants, it also feeds on the slug and the fly (both animals). This means that the turtle does not feed on plants only, so cannot be described as a herbivore.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0653/32 Q2(c)(i) (Cambridge)

Most candidates successfully constructed a food chain. A common error was to list the organisms without including the arrows indicating direction of energy flow.

— Examiner report, October/November 2022, 0653/43 Q1(b)(i) (Cambridge)
