See it on the paper →Comprehensive responses • Most candidates calculated the formula mass of magnesium sulfate as 120. • Many candidates used the correct formula and rounded correctly to give the value 6.2. Limited responses • Some candidates calculated the relative formula mass of magnesium sulfate to give a value other than 120. • Some candidates divided 120 by the mass rather than the other way round.
— Examiner report, February/March 2026, 0654/42 Q6(d) (Cambridge)
Many candidates were able to calculate the moles of hydrogen as being 0.25. Fewer calculated the molecular mass as 2, often giving the overall mass as 0.25 instead of 0.5 g. Very occasionally the formula used was incorrectly rearranged.
— Examiner report, February/March 2024, 0654/42 Q5(b) (Cambridge)
Many fully correct responses, almost all scored the mark for Mr of ammonia = 17. A few calculated an incorrect Mr but went on to use their value correctly so scoring two marks. Some of those with a correct Mr did an upside down calculation.
