What examiners said
Comprehensive responses • A few candidates were able to correctly identify the structure showing the arrangement of atoms in an alloy. Limited responses • Many candidates selected structures that showed a regular arrangement of atoms.
— Examiner report, February/March 2026, 0654/32 Q6(b)(ii) (Cambridge)
This question proved demanding. Most candidates recognised that there were delocalised electrons, but far fewer understood that positive zinc ions were also shown. These were often described as particles, atoms or metal. Few candidates correctly mentioned electrostatic attraction.
— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0654/41 Q7(f) (Cambridge)
Most were able to access at least part of this question though there was some confusion over malleability. A few thought the alloy would be more malleable than pure aluminium which would make it suitable for aircraft.
