What examiners said

Many candidates gave the correct expression, pressure = force / surface area, but failed to rearrange this equation and substitute the given values of pressure and surface area to show that the force is 2.2 × 106 N.

— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 0973/41 Q3(c)(i) (Cambridge)

Most candidates were able to use the correct formula of force divided by the area to give pressure. The principle of error carried forward was applied if an incorrect weight for the pond skater was given in part (a)(i).

— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 0973/42 Q3(a)(ii) (Cambridge)

Many candidates were able to suggest that the area of the normal wheels was less, but few candidates stated that the pressure would therefore be greater.

— Examiner report, May/June 2022, 0973/31 Q12(a) (Cambridge)
