What examiners said

When discussing particles in solids, liquids and gases candidates should be encouraged to consider three aspects: motion, separation and arrangement. In this question relating specifically to a model only the latter two were relevant as the model did not show the motion of the particles and so provided no evidence in this regard. Therefore, candidates should have responded with the idea that parti...

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0973/32 Q8(c) (Cambridge)

Not all candidates understood to focus on the movement of water molecules during melting. The idea that particles would move faster was well understood, but fewer candidates were able to describe the movement of particles in a liquid, with many describing the movement of particles in a gas.

— Examiner report, May/June 2025, 0973/41 Q5(b) (Cambridge)

The majority of candidates gained one mark for understanding that the forces between atoms are strong, that this allows the atoms to vibrate but keeps the atoms in a fixed position. Fewer candidates appreciated that in solids the arrangement of atom is regular or ordered or in a lattice. Many candidates gave answers such as the arrangement being small, arranged or random.
