What examiners said

Most candidates understood that the antibiotic killed some of the bacteria. Most were able to state that the non-resistant bacteria died, or that only the resistant bacteria survived. A few thought that the bacteria that survived acquired resistance as it was the last one left.

— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 0973/41 Q7(a)(i) (Cambridge)

Although many candidates understood that the resistant bacteria reproduced, the idea of passing on the resistant gene/allele/DNA was not well expressed. A relatively common misconception was that the dead bacteria became resistant or got infected by the resistant bacteria.

— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 0973/41 Q7(a)(ii) (Cambridge)

Natural selection was correctly stated by some candidates. The most common incorrect answer was mutation.
