What examiners said

Candidates were asked to explain what is meant by the term ‘artificial neural network (ANN)’. Most candidates achieved at least one mark, usually for recognising how an ANN is modelled on a biological brain. However, a good range of well written answers was seen, with many candidates going on to achieve more marks. Candidates were asked to explain what is meant by the term ‘artificial neural netwo...

— Examiner report, October/November 2023, 9618/33 Q12 (Cambridge)

There were some good, imaginative answers to this question. Many candidates were able to describe how the AI uses image recognition to focus on a person. Some candidates needed to be careful that they are not just describing the use of motion sensors in a generic monitoring or control system. It was sometimes difficult to work out the role of the AI in candidate responses.

— Examiner report, May/June 2023, 9618/11 Q4(c) (Cambridge)

There were some good, imaginative answers to this question. Some candidates needed to be careful about using brand names in their answers. Many of the responses included statements about training and/or learning and the use of a database of commands.
