What examiners said

Many candidates found this challenging. Answers were often not sufficiently detailed. For each substance a clear statement linked to the ability of the lone pair of electrons on the N to accept a proton was required. Many candidates recognised that the alkyl group is an electron donating group and the lone pair on the N of NH2 is delocalised into the benzene ring. However, the relatively low basic...

— Examiner report, October/November 2022, 9701/43 Q7(b)(iii) (Cambridge)

Most candidates gave the correct structure of the zwitterion.

— Examiner report, October/November 2021, 9701/41 Q10(a) (Cambridge)

Most candidates found this challenging. Candidates had to deduce that ions A and B had a net single positive charge and C a 2+ charge. Some incorrectly suggested that A was the zwitterion of lysine and that B had a net single negative charge.
