The student was provided with a 0.01 mol dm –3 stock solution of DCPIP. After preliminary research, the student decided to dilute the stock solution to prepare a 0.0005 mol dm –3 DCPIP solution to use in the experiment. The student used two steps to dilute the stock solution to the 0.0005 mol dm –3 DCPIP solution. Comp...

Glucagon binds to G-protein-coupled receptors on kidney cells. The binding of glucagon to kidney cells activates a cell signalling pathway that is similar to the cell signalling pathway activated when glucagon binds to liver cells. Fig. 5.2 is an outline of the cell signalling pathway activated when glucagon binds to k...

• • • The allele for red eyes, C R , is dominant to the other three alleles. The allele for apricot eyes, C A , is dominant to the allele for honey eyes, C H . The allele for white eyes, C W , is recessive to the other three alleles. Construct a genetic diagram to show the genotypes, phenotypes and ratio of the offspri...

The function of the enzyme iduronate 2-sulfatase is to break down certain complex molecules. Hunter syndrome is a rare, inherited condition in humans, caused by iduronate 2-sulfatase not functioning properly or by iduronate 2-sulfatase not being produced. This will cause the complex molecules to build up, leading to pr...

What examiners said
The main correct point made by candidates was to state that independent assortment happened in metaphase I. A very few candidates attempted to use symbols to explain how the two pairs of chromosomes, each with a dominant and recessive allele, could line up in two different ways giving four possible gametes and hence the ratio of phenotypes seen in Table 6.1. The majority of candidates needed to ex...

Most candidates were able to correctly identify 90 cm3 as the correct value for step 1 of the dilution and 50 cm3 as the correct value for step 2. The most common misconception was giving 100 cm3 as the answer for step 1, when in fact the total volume of solution A should be 100 cm3 which is achieved by adding 90 cm3 of distilled water.
